No, I could see it when my female was only 2 inch. Sorry I don't really know about EBJD's, but i have a feeling it may be different, since they have a lot more blue on them.

Not always! I've seen a few males that were shorter finned. The sure fire way to sex an EBJD is the vent.

Generally EBJDs look the same, male or female. While the longer pointed fins might be true in some cases, there are always exceptions. I wouldn't vent the fish though, I don't like handing my EBJD with my hands. He always gets moved with the net and net only (when I have to move him, which has only been 4 times). Just throw a smaller known female regular Dempsey in and if it starts showing off for her, look for a breeding tube to drop. If they fight and no tubes ever drop, it could be 2 females.
