sex this JD for me please...

I thought I knew how to sex JD's and I was confident that this was a female that I bought for my male EBJD, however now the fish is about 4 inches and is losing the blue beard, the EBJD is about 5 inches and chases her around, away from his cave. I am starting to think that my female is in fact a male, here are a few pictures from a couple of weeks ago. I have recently seperated them and have introduced a smaller, more blue bearded JD into the tank with which the EBJD has no problems with. So what do you people think Male or female?

+3 female. The blue on the gill plates and lack of color on the body are dead give away.

yeah, what about blue gene variants? can this be a blue gene variant male? I have always assumed that the dark jack dempseys were just a variant of the regular JD and not a blue gene variant. Is this true?
