sex this JD for me please...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The blue on the gills is in small patches with lots of space between the patches rather than a larger solid blue area. I've had males that looked just like that. Like I said though just a guess.

yeah, what about blue gene variants? can this be a blue gene variant male? I have always assumed that the dark jack dempseys were just a variant of the regular JD and not a blue gene variant. Is this true?

I've always thought there were slight differences in the blue gene carrying JD's, But when it boils down to it, there really isn't. This is why EBJD breeders usually always cull the non EBJD fry. My regular JD's are the offspring of EBJD x BGJD, but I don't think any of them carry the BG even though I was told by the guy that sold them to me they were. I think this, because I've yet to get a single EBJD fry from even my EBJD and his mate. So I'm pretty much giving up on all that. Gonna try and sell most of my stock and move on. Just not that into it all anymore.

Female
the dorsal fin doesn't look like a male's at all. Male's are much more pointed

This is not an accurate way of telling. Both my females dorsal fins are very pointed, JD's and Convicts are 2 of the easier species to sex at a small size. Blue gill plates and little to no coloring past the start of the dorsal fin on the body is a female. Males are the opposite.

thank you, that is interesting, thats too bad that its hard to know, I was hoping there would be some way of knowing. I'd still be ecstatic it they paired up and had offspring.
