Sexing a Jaguar Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is the best picture I could get of him, as he thought it was feeding time and wouldn't stop moving all over the place.

Also excuse the crap all over the tank. I need to scrub his tank. We got him from someone on Ebay, and once we placed him in the tank all this stuff is on the tank. It's like those little worms from when you over feed, except he gets fed here only once a day and I scoop out any extra.

I also don't know how old he is. I know he's a couple years from what the previous owner was telling me.

That's a much better pic - I would go with male in this case based on both the finnage being slightly more pointed, and combination with the overall patterning as well. Good looking fish with some potential there!

How can you tell? I was thinking the thick black spots that run down it's lateral line.

Females seem to have a more golden base coloration. Also like the others said, they don't have spots all over their body and face like males. The pattern on their fins also looks more washed out whereas in the males it's bold.

Here's a pic of my former F0 female from Lago Nicaragua to get an idea compared with your male.

What arensome good fish that can be housed with them? I don't know if he is aggressive or not as he was alone when i got him and is still alone. I was thinking of putting him in a river tank but I want to make sure he will be ok.

If the tank is big enough, most CA's and a lot of the more aggressive SA's would be fine. If you're going to do a community tank, try to go with all males to prevent the havoc of having a breeding pair. What's the tank size btw?

It's a 135 long that I am turning into a river tank...

this is what I wanted to place in the tank: Mind you, one of each..

-Jag
-RTSNX (he's only 4" for now)
-Datnoid
-Fire Eel or Bichir (both?)
-some danios or dithers of some sort
-African Leopard Leaf Fish (several)
-Jack Dempsey

That's pretty much it. I can't really think of anything else that I would even want to put in there. I want to plant it up, and get some drift wood in there.

The Male is the bigger on the right while the female is the smaller on the left the pic also doesn't show the fleck (purple tint/shine) on the male. The coloration on the fish is the key to sexing as far as I am able to tell and yes you can see the female mainly has a dark lateral line on her body. Hope this helps y'all
