Hello everyone im a newbie and hope i am posting this in the correct area. also love the forum .I have a few Jags and would like to see if we can pin down the sex of my oldest one. This fish has a lot of blue on the anal fin but the pictures dont show it well. sorry the pictures are not the best. Also i have two smaller ones that are dark, almost black. The fish in the picture was born with only one eye, do you think that will make breeding to dangerous or no? Thanks..Andy20161128_004200-1.jpg 20161128_004305-1.jpg 20161128_004200-1.jpg 20161128_004305-1.jpg 20161128_004410-1.jpg

The Jag in picture is a male and nice looking one too, I don't think 1 eye has anything to do with breeding :P Good Luck with your breeding project.
Note:
The dark color one are stressed out cause they are not the alpha one in the group, best option is remove them from the current tank.

Thanks for the info.I dont know why i thought it was a female. I had purchased several and this the one i kept. ended up being the smallest of the group.lol. He is a year old and only about 6 inch. The other three are less then 6 months old so hopefully 1 of the other three end up being a female. One of the dark ones swims with the bigger one a lot. no clue why.

Soon you will know for sure cause if you have a pair that ready to spawn they will probably kill or beat up all other jags.

Thanks for the help. I just set up a 125 to move them into. anyone here use sand in a Jag tank?

Jag love to dig and sand might get into your filter intake and cause problem, most of the time peoples go bare bottom, DIY slate bottom, or use small gravel if you couldn't stand with bare bottom.

Because managuense dig and spit, as Yuki said, if you use a light weight sand like play sand, or fine aragonite it could stay in suspension long enough to get in and ruin impellers filters.
I have used PFS with Parachromis and not had that problem because it is dense enough to drop quickly back to the bottom.
I have had blind fish (1 eye or both) do just fine as breeders, the blindness is usually been due to scraps with other fish, or a bad bout with ick.
I would worry a bit, if the fish was born blind, it could be an inherited birth defect, and that defect may be passed along to many of its progeny, just as I would not use a fish born with a curved spine as a breeder.

If by PFD you mean pool filter sand that is what im using. As for the eye im thinking it was a fight last year. When i purchased these this fish was the smallest if i remember right, and hid a lot. but who knows i guess time will tell. i just hope one of the other three in the tank end up being a female. then i will have to find homes for the other two.lol

Yes pool filter sand, and I used it in all tanks, and have had successful spawns of many cichlids.
If the eye loss is due to a fight, then no problem.
Females always seemed to have more prominent black bars, and are more torpedo shaped.
My males have always had higher , more steep shaped profiles.
When I had spawning managuense in the 80s, I didn't have a camera.
But the photos below are an example of what I mean.motaguense

Great pictures. I'm sure with the help of all here the one i posted is a male. Now I'm hoping one of the other three is a female. The biggest of the three i think is a male because the biggest has started chasing him, i will have to keep a eye on it and get it out of the 125. The other two stay in caves and under drift wood a lot. They are only about 3-4 inches so probably to small to sex? Also do these grow slow? My male is only about six inches and is over a year old... Thanks.. Andy
