I was wondering how to sex these guys.

The other day I got 1 thats approx. 2 inches from Ira at the wish list. Beautiful fish. My 1st of this type.

I did notice that it gets a black bloch in the center portion of the dorsal fin during aggression.

That mean its female ?

How big do males and females get ?

How aggressive are they ?

I wasn't able to sex mine till they were big enough to vent cause my eyes played tricks on me. I thought it would be as easy to sex as rest of carpintis family but its not for me anyway. Then I was able to.distinguish by body/head form. I had two females that out grew my males right away too. Good luck

Imagine...

What if I have a female carpintis with a male umbee and the spawned.

Anythings possible.

The umbee loves to chase it.

Wow Jason, it was the opposite with my group. I had one male that blew up and is now 2x as big and bright as the rest. The females have a different head profile than the males. Their head kinda tapers from the forehead to the lips, while the male has more of a nonlinear slope. In my group the black dorsal blotch is another easy way to tell male from female.

Keep a close eye on them and keep that divider ready. Good luck bro!

Here's some pics of my male (Ike) and female (Tina) from Ira I bought a year ago. Male on left...female on right. Like what flowerpower says, my male was bigger than my female....but she's caught up since then. I had another male initially but gave that one to a friend...thinkin these two were pairing off.:screwy: Aggression wise, I've got these two by themselves in a 90 gallon w/ a divider in between cuz they don't get along at all. I've tried dithers, raising temp, rearranging tank but..... As for personality...I'm sure it's just mine but I've never had any cichlids as shy and finnicky as these. Mine prefer various sinking pellets...they won't touch frozen, freeze dried, or floating pellets. Very rarely will they come out with the lights on. Here's the funny part, they let me come up to the tank as long as its slow and no sudden movements. I had to literally creep and crawl like a papparazzi to sneak in these pics a month ago:ROFL:.

I agree Ed:) i normally go with the black spot on dorsal for sexing carpintis but they fooled me this time kinda like festae. so i said heck with it and vented;)

Here is a more recent photo just taken of my vont.

Its about 3.5 inches.

Male or female ?

What is it about this fish that would make you believe its a male or female ?

How big do males and females get ?

It appears to be a female based upon the dark coloration in the rear half of the fish and the shape of the head. Also the rounded out belly.
