Camshaft's dat has dropped her breeding tubes so she is a female. I havent heard of anyone else sexing there dat.
So if anyone has a definite male in FL that needs companionship, let me know and we can make a play date. See if we cant make some ST babies. ;)

There is no way externally to sex a dat. The only way you could tell is if the female has produced unfertile eggs or if her breeding tubes drop. Camshaft's dat has dropped her breeding tubes so she is a female. I havent heard of anyone else sexing there dat.

Believe me, I know very little about this, but don't male and female fish BOTH have breeding tubes? My recollection is that the shape is different. Anyone know?

interesting...does anyone have pics of these tubes dropping out of the body?? Thats something we need pics of.

I think that i heard she layed unfertile eggs before also. I dont know if its true or not.

When the guy from Thailand (who should know what he is talking about) made these comments about the color differences between male and female Dats, I presume that this was based upon the dissection of many fish as a prelude to cooking and eating them. Assuming this information is accurate, I am now wondering if many of those STs that we refer to as "unstable" (and hence, less desirable) are actually FEMALES. If so, we have all been working dilligently to stock our Dat tanks with only males. No wonder we can't get them to breed in captivity.

I dont believe that the color of the Datnoide has any effect on its sex. If someone has proof of this please share.

I wanted to provide pic sof the putative male and female STs, based upon the description of the guy from Thailand. All I can say is that these two fish really seem to like one another. I have fairly subdued lighting in my 350, so clarity and color are lacking, but the fish on the top is a bright gold and the lower fish is coppery-brown.

better pics would help
and i dont think color is gonna make it matter

I agree the pics are crappy. I know that there is a great deal of color variation in Dats and I wouldn't have bothered to respond to this guy's comments if these two fish didn't seem to have such an inordinate affinity for one another. Nonethless, I am also skeptical.
