Sexing Firemouth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks male.Female vent would normally be fatter and blunter.

There is alot of variation in meeki body shapes due to overbreeding in mass bought local fish shop meeki.
Wild fish will also vary in body length and or mass due to catch location. Riverine meeki tend to be slimmer and longer than those found in lakes or lagoons.

I have been fooled many times by meeki so am always reluctant to say with confidence what sex the fish are.

Fully mature fish are easier to tell apart and if kept in groups, behaviour is normally the first give away sign of reliably sexing.

As they grow older males will be noticeably be bigger than females.

Cant see the whole fish in shot... mouth is cut off...

Tried getting a picture of the first pictures vent tube. The one from the second shot is very shy, so it’s hard to get pictures.

Still say the first one is male due to vent.
Second one could be female or possibly sub dominant male.
