Sexing firemouths?

Different geographic locations will cause slight differences in their physical apperaence. For example a land locked lake will have a species that has been isolated for generations so they may appear to look different. I have lac pedida FM's from Rusty Wessel.(not sure I spelled the lac name right? The are from Central America/Costa Rica.) They look different than my linebred FM's mainly in color. They are less intense in iridophores(metallic scales, like in betta fish) and seem more grey than blue. Otherwise they look the same.

I would say no, Male and female distinction is not head related but I am not an Ichthyologist and can be wrong on this. I have always sexed my fish via the MATURE dorsal finnage and pre-spawn vent tubes.
