Sexing Flower Ray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Must have jinxed myself with this post. My flower after six years now is not looking good just as of last night. Not sure what's going on seen some very irradiated erratic swimming I think he got tagged by a stinger. It usually doesn't swim up the glass. Maybe I shouldn't post on here it's hard on my rays. He won't eat today I'm going to be heart broken if I loose this guy.

No way, that's crazy! Hope she pulls through! Do you have any Photos?

Well this morning he was straight up nose out of the tank freaking out all over the place. He has no sign of a stinger anywhere. He's in with my boesemani and snow leopard for many years now. Nothing else is having issues. These rays are extremely difficult compared to any types most commonly kept. It's not a myth at all

I am so sorry...

Not a change at all. I left him in the tank as a specimen . The others are breeding groups he never shows interest.

Think it was either the 1 micron carbon filters for my ro and drip system or either just stress of moving a few rays around. I'm not convinced it was an exhausted filter yet because I have fairly new pups in that same system and they are not at all effected and in my experience pups usually are more sensitive. But maybe a bit of both and stress .
We usually only use 5 micron filters they last longer . I drip a lot of water so they usually only last a month. I left the 1 microns in more than that . ivreally wish I hadn't taken down the other part of my system last year now. Took down about 700 gallons and toned it down a bit. Something very special became available I had to take last week one of those you cannot say no to or you'll regret forever rays. I'm not setup well for quarantine I did not expect to do anything but breeding what I had. Moving a bunch of rays around and the possibility of carbon blocks leaking a bit of chlorine could have done this poor guy in. He ate a worm this morning but now is in the threatened positions like the disc curling but not advanced yet. It's sad I took a measurement of my flower and he surprising is massive. I had to move it into the pond (same system of water) just so he could stop zipping around stressing the mommy rays out. He was a lot larger than he looks I took measurement from tip of nose to base of tail and it's an easy 24" Ray. For people who don't know tiger and flower Ray have the exact body shape. It's a lot different than say the more commonly kept one like Leo's hen Motos. If I take a measure across his disc side to side he will only be around 20" they are long bodied rays with small eyes and bit different skull structure. The only two I seen like this is tiger and flower I was hoping long ago falkneri was part of that but it unfortunately not.

I'm off on holidays and would like to contribute more to this forum. Maybe some more guys will come back and join in as I know they read and don't like to discuss there operations freely it's understandable.
