Sexing JD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A blue gene JD looks exactly like a normal JD. The EB gene is recessive, so you need to breed to fish with the recessive genes to get a portion of the offspring to be EBJD.

To me, the OP's fish looks like a nicely colored regular JD.

I'm not sure, could be a beautiful female normal JD or perhaps a blue. Maybe YankeeJack YankeeJack or AKBlueJacks AKBlueJacks has some insight.

Thanks Gourami. It is a brilliantly colored JD. The pic of it when it was a juvenile suggests to me that this is not an EBJD, as it would have not looked like that as a juvenile.

One of the best looking phenotypically normal JDs I've seen though. I'd call it a female.

:) Nice pics!

Thanks for the insight! I’ve had multiple JDs but this girl is the best colored out of them all, even better than some of my males!

I will keep updating this thread with pics as it grows!

As to Jons comment I agree with, to me I’ve found bg jack Dempsey’s to have more color reminiscent to wild jack Dempsey’s

Currently i’m feeding it hikari gold, and frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. She won’t eat veggie pellets ever. Also eats the occasional stink bug when they fly into the tank?

I have not been on in a long time, but this caught my eye. I Agee 100% with YankeeJack YankeeJack . I saw that someone suggested that it may be a blue gene Jack Dempsey, but there is no way to tell if they carry the recessive blue gene by physical appearance. It could be a blue gene or just a very nice colored wild color.

Good to know, excited to see how it’s colors develop even more as it gets to the 6-8 inch mark considering how much it’s developed since I got it Im sure I’m in for a treat when it’s full grown!

Any foods you recommend to get them bulked up? This one has grown incredibly slow. 3.5”-4” in 8 months, and I know that’s not normal growth rate for a normal JD
