Hi everyone. The helpful girl at my LFS picked out a "pair" of juvi JD's for me...quite confidently I might add. They're about 2" long. Can I please get some help in knowing how to sex them myself? Thanks! BTW, my juvi pike cichlid is pretty pissed about the situation!

The best way is to check the gill plates. The bluer the gill plate is a female. Males have less to no blue on the gill plate.

Thanks for taking the time. So I took your suggestion...they pretty much have the same amount of blue on their gill plates. Could be too young still? Someone said the female has more roundish fins. True? Which fins? Again, thanks!!!

pics would help but fins dont really count in jds but put them in black gravel and then the blue will stand out more in there gill plates and then take some piccies and show us

From my experience, my males have been dark, good coloring with any color substrate, and my females where lighter on lighter, and darker on darker. But thats not thought of as a common theme.

Thanks everyone. Only at night, with flashlight in hand, was I able to tell that one has clearly more blue flecks on its/her gill plates. That one is in fact much lighter in color too. I'd love to show you some pics but I haven't been very successful in getting any worth showing. Appreciate everyone's help!

OK guys, already traded one of the original JD's I had cause I was pretty sure I had two females. Got a juvi with as dark gill plates as I could find. it was very black in the store. However, since I've had it home, it has remained totally lighter than the one I put it in with. Here are some pics, although I am sorry for the poor quality. Can you help me figure out if I have a pair? So I'm hoping that the lighter one is a male....Thanks!!!

Both male!?!?! I thought blue spangles on the gill plates = female??? The darker one has loads of spangles. Help me understand...

Why do you say they are both males? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your input and I'm thrilled to hear you think the lighter one is a male.

anybody else care to comment? Thanks for looking.
