what are some methods used or known to sex oscars, especially in size where they are just maturing or starting to mature?can anyone give me some?even if it is not accurate...i want to know all despite it's low accuracy.:) just curious guys...please note again that i am not looking for accuracy.:D
thank you..

Your question is a very old one. Oscars are sexually monomorphic in appearence. If you want to sex an oscar you must watch them spawn. The females egg tube with be larger and rounder whilst the males sexual organ will be shorter and pencil shaped. That is the only real method for determining the sex of oscars.

all i want is to know what were the other methods or theory used in sexing oscars..i know the venting is the best..i am just curious about the other methods that was thought to be effective.

Venting is the only way with any amount of consistency in results. Fin length, coloration, number of occellations, pretty much anything else is just random hobbyist mumbo jumbo. It's possible that there is another, much simpler way but until someone finds it....

That is the only method. Period. You can guess all you want but the only way for sure to know you have a mating pair is to catch them doing the nasty, or to see fry swimming around. And if all you see is fry swimming around then there is no way for sure to tell which is the male and which is the female.

AH someone else beat me to it lol,

ok..thank you guys..although i really i wanted to know what were those methods even if how mumbo jumbo they sounded like. :D...oh well...thanks again.

Well some people have said that the more aggresive fish are likely to be males, I think this is nonsense since I have had many female fish attack and damage their mates. There is also the general body shape rule. Male fish should be more slender and females should be more rounded in the stomach area. Suffice it to say that none of these methods work on oscars though.

Another "method" is to check the vents. I have heard that sometimes females vents look like 0o and a males vent would look like oo. I call my oscar a female cause of this reason, however I have seen 100% for sure males have the same shape. Using any of these "methods" would be purely for your benifit, of wanting to call your fish a he/she.

now this is the answer i am waiting.:D
i am a fish breeder and most of them are cichlids,so i am very very very very familiar with the venting method.any other method or "thought so" way of sexing them?:D
is there also a theory that says females have block spot on their dorsal fins?
again,i really wanna know all other methods even if it's not proven or accurate.just curious guys.:D:grinno:

The spot on the dorsal fin works with some cichlids, not with osacrs though. Normally when dealing with new world cichlids the males with grow a nuchal hump that is larger than the females (if the female grows one at all). The male fish will also be larger and more colorful. These axioms hold true for most all american cichlids. Oscars are exceptions.
