Sexing my JD??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome, go get her a Male...very easy to tell. Find one that does NOT have the thick blue under chin, and has lotsa spangles.

Would they both fit in a 55G? I read that 55G is a bare minimum for a single JD? I cannot afford a bigger tank...

Ya. Definitey add some tankmates and she will darken up. Female Con type fish would work well too.

So she would darken up if I add tankmates, even if they are not JDs?? Wouldn't she try to kill any tankmate in a 55gal? It feels like the more I read about JDs the more I get confused... :nilly:

I'm saying that because I have a juvenile GT in another tank but I dont know if it would be a good idea to add it...

I have a male JD and he is with a BGK, Senegal bichir, silver tip shark, red tail shark, and a pleco. he stays light until I put another cichlid in the tank then he is really dark its a defensive thing. same reason they put their dorsil up when you walk by the tank. I had to put my jeweled cichlid in my daughters tank cause they wouldnt stop fighting. but jewels are known for that. otherwise my JD leaves everything else be

If she has always been alone, she may not accept tank mates. Especially if only one is added where she could pick on it relentlessly.

Tiger barbs are a good choice to. Anything she can interact with and show her aggressive/defensive colors and stimulate her. Try a temporary mirror for laughs.

She has only been alone for a month (since I bought her). But she is growing tremendously fast and doubled her size already (for what I read JDs are slow growers). Maybe because I almost exclusively feed her with live moths and other garden bugs???

^ that's great but I would recommend getting a high quality pellet for her and using the insects as occasional treats. She can't get all the nutrition she needs from garden bugs alone, it could lead to health problems in the long run.

Here is a view of my tank. She is hiding in the terra cotta pots, as she always does... she doesn't mess with the plants so far anyway that's ok if she destroys them I will add plastic ones.
