Sexing my severums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, but Heros severus are one of the only species of severum where both males and females have facial markings. The differences are very slight and are hard to tell apart until they're large and of breeding age. It's a subtle difference.
I've never kept these before so i didn't know that, pretty interesting

To give you an idea, here are some screenshots of mine.

You can see in the last picture that the female's face turns dark green-blue during spawning but the markings almost disappear. The female in the middle picture is in normal/non-spawning coloration and has the yellow face with light markings, but depending on how the light catches the markings they can almost disappear.

Males, by contrast, almost always have the blue face with dark maroon and red markings that do not fade.

Those are beautiful bro, got to get me some of those

They look much better once they settle in. Those videos I took a few days after I imported them. Here's the pair once they were conditioned and breeding.

Do you have any fish for sale bro ?

Just to add my observations and some info these fish are ~6" and 5" right now so would expect them to be of breeding age. the blue on my fish seems to fade a little here and there but the maroon markings are always there, I'm pretty confident based on whats been said here and the appearance of the undersides that these are males. I usually reserve judgement on sex until I see tubes drop. I've definitely been surprised before, but there can only be 2 reasons why their junk hasn't come out and I figured it was because I had two males.
