Sexing Sliver Aro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had a confirm pair of silvers that was around 24-28 inches but they died. i made a thread about them some months back.

this isnt 100% accurate but in a pool of silvers all the same size..... lookin down some seem to have a wider heads and i wus told those are the males cuz they brood the eggs after females release them

How did you confirm the male?

there is no way to sex them in my opinion

i had two 20" silvers, always though one was male and one was female...long story short one died using a move. I did a autopsy and found out that the one i thought was male turned out to be a female

Any pics of this?

LOL, so anyways, is there any major differences between your female and the other 2?

Be it with the Asian Green pair, or the silvers that I have had.....I can't really see any diff in the fishes head....

I have seen diagrams on aro sites with measurements of fishes mouths, distance top of head to bottom, and few other facial features showing the diff between male and female.....I have yet to convince one of the fish to stand still and let me get accurate measurements....:screwy:

What I have noticed with the aros that I have had, is that the abdomen on what I think are females to be rounder more robust...and the fish have very wide backs.

I will try taking few pics of the 3 silvers I have here presently.....I will try to show the slender and tapered male...compared to the 2 round, wide females.

The females that just dropped the eggs is approx 4 years old, the other female 2, and the male should be around 3.....maybe not mature yet...if you notice in the vid, he does come to inspect the eggs, but little else...LOL

Yes I was aware of your thread, I missed that you cut them open. Did you take any pics of this?

i didn't take pics of the inside cause i was too eager to see if they were a pair.....sorry......... but the male had no signs of eggs within him.

You said

"these two where specifically hand picked from 3-4in with different head body ratio."

Gotta say, that is some eye you have there!

i did hand pick them when they were young. i'm going to do this again to see if i'm right on sexing but who knows i might be wrong. but so far i seem to be correct.

So the only thing you were able to determine was that the larger aro had no eggs in it. You did not actually identify the sexual organs?
