sexing umbee?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my 7.5 inch umbie has no black on the dorsal fin but it has slight blackness at the bottem of the pelvic fins, its always showing its vent which looks like a rose thorn. Unlike the large female umbie i have it definetly is a headbanger. Also its dorsal and anal fins has nearly reached the end of the tail.

Apparently a dead give away for a female is dark tear drops below the eyes, mine has the tear drop only on one eye.

I know without a pic its difficult, what do you guys think the sex is?

I say it's a female because the coloration is very wrong. At that size there should be typical male colors. I have a 4" fish from Ken (the poster before me) and he is already displaying mature colors. The body shape resembles a football on that fish too.

Also, I just agree with Ken because he knows his stuff.

What? :screwy:

Just speaking from experience. I have a 4-5" male that already has strong male coloration. At 8" unless this is a very stressed fish that is hiding its colors you should be able too see it.

Most guys that have umbees see hints as to what sex they are while they grow out. Even tiny juveniles when they get into a spat with another species turn yellow with dark dorsals and pelvic fins showing that they're a female. Umbees are not as hard to sex as you might believe. Ask Roliva,Regan,John Rambo most of those guys figured it out at 5".
