Sexing Young Green Terrors

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cich that is a beautiful male and if mine looks half as good as yours I will be very happy, you wouldnt happen to have any pics of him when he was in the 2 inch range would ya. My plan is to take pics of mine about every three months and document his color change and growth.

Chclid 2006- thanks for the info I would love to be able to vent my GT's but at 2 inches I dont think it would be very easy.

I am just trying to get a few females in the tank so I have a good chance of them bonding with them being smaller and all. Plus this is the aspect of the hobby that I enjoy, trying to figure out which sex is which and then attempting to breed them.

Two of them have shoter blockier heads and the others head is more elongated and pointy.

i usually look into a tank full of juvenile GT and pick the one chasing the others and who has a space of empty water around him, get them to feed the tank and see who gets first fill. probably just luck but thats always worked for me to bag a male.
Best way to tell for me is the coloring in the fins. Or the lack of coloring. Males have the more colorful fins where females have no coloring at all, or very little.

Heres my Male. He about 5.5 inches and his "pointed" fins only started pointing when he his the 4.5 inch mark.
Using the pic you supplied as an example, do you notice how the body is light blue color? It seems to me that females do not really get that blue but remain gold.

Everytime I look for a fish using the traits that other people describe I end up with a female. Of course venting is the sure way (or as mentioned seeing who the fertilizer is). But when I look for a male this is the feature I look for.

And the other pic that was on the first page of this post with the male and female you can see if you look closely what I am talking about.

Based on this, I think the OP's fish is a female.

Ill have to check. I got him when it was about 2 inches. Im not sure if the pics are of my current GT or my late GT which didnt make it b/c of my RD.

Yeah he does have a pearlescent color to him in different lights. Females I notice have a drabby color. Doesnt have a shine to it at all.

This is my guy when he was 3.5 inches. This is the youngest pic I have of him sorry. Notice the lack of pointed fins @ 3.5 inches.

And again even at that size he has the light blue I was talking about. So far, aside form venting, this is what I look for.

GT sexing are hit or miss when they are only 2". If you are lucky you will see some that are coloring out at that size but you will not see there true colors unit they are 4" or bigger. Some sub dominant males will look like females. Once you remove the dominant males out the sub dominant will begin to show there colors.

I will agree with this.

yeah I have noticed that with my GT it is more gold as of right now but I think the biggest I have is a male I have added 4 more smaller ones hoping that I get a female out of that new group. I will remove others as I can tell wether they are female or not. I am looking at breeding when they get bigger but for now I am just working on getting a pair when they are small so they have time to pair bond.
