ShadowStryder's Silver Dollar Growouts (M. 'blackberry', fasciatus & lippincotti)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ahhhh, Maculatus is high backed. Well then I definitely have Lippincotti as mine are elongated and two of the three have very strong orange spots right behind the gill plate above the pectoral fins. Are they sexed the same, females having a bi-lobed anal fin while the male has a single, straight and red anal fin?

Thanks for the confirmation...........

Not just "high backed" but the head is more "bird like" in M. maculatus and the bottom part of the body closer looking to Mylossoma aureum.

It is general consensus that females have a bi-lobed anal fin while males have the straight red anal fin BUT recently I have been doubting this test to determine the sex in many of these silver dollars. For example the Myleus sp. "green" silver dollars Jeff Rapps brought in -- both male & female have bi-lobed anal fins!! Another example, Myleus schomburgkii thin bars -- males have the long red anal fin and females have the bi-lobed fin with yellow tint. Recently, I have found a few pieces of thin bars that have bi-lobed anal fins with extreme red in the anal fin and cheek area! What's up with that? I also believe that some silver dollars look sooo different between genders (male & female) that they are mistaken for different species all together. And I truly believe in some species that a male sds can have both a bi-lobed anal fin & straight anal fin. Call me crazy. It's back to the drawing board for me......

I don't know either, hopefully with my Tigers I have two with straight red anal fins and 4 with bi lobed anal fins with hooks at the end and clear to yellow tint. So am hoping that its 2m/4f with the intent to breed.
How did the Green SDs from Rapps turn out? Almost pulled the trigger on them but in the end didn't. And the blackberries, all three have large, red and long hooks. But in a video of larger specimens of blackberries I posted in another thread they had the same type of anal fins (large, red and hooked) but I spotted a couple with a bi-lobed anal. I will post that vid up in case you hadn't seen it. Here it is.

Yeah neat video. Although I doubt you will be able to breed those as they are hybrids. The SD's from rapps are simply AMAZING in my opinion. They lost their green & spots but are different looking than any other SD I have seen in person or the internet. Wes just posted pictures of those in his update rare fish & posted on his blog. Check them out: http://fugupuff-fugupuff.blogspot.com/
I have two females & two males. Graceful & peaceful fish all around compared to other SDs I own.

Those greens have turned out nice, fancy the lipstick:). Do you have a purported size that they can reach? I talked to Wes a while back when I got my blackberries and he was willing to sell them (Greens) at that time but I had the chance at the Tigers and went that route.
As for as the blackberries I guess we will see as for as if they are fertile or not. Wouldnt be the first hybrids to be fertile. Of course I probably have all of the same sex even if they were fertile.:(

No max size as these are a new species of silver dollars. Even Rapps and Wes had no idea to their development. Based on growth rate relative to my other silver dollars, I would say a solid 8"s. My biggest is a male about 6"s at the moment.

Little update after converting the whole 125 to the shoals of SDs. Now hopefully onto some breeding of the Fasciatus and maybe the blackberries if they are fertile.
Also spotted are now confirmed Lippincotti.

Nice setup and SD's. On a side note females should have the single hook anal fin and the males have the double hook which looks just like a single hook with a bump 3/4 of the way down. I am not sure why on the net you get different answers for the same fish. Everybody doesn't seem to have the same consensus. I have always sexed my SD's this way and currently have wide bar, thin bar and red hooks. This feature is not always as apparent on other species of SD's but still can be seen.

Sorry for the side track but here is a good video of males circling a female.
