Has anyone ever used them for filter pads?

haha, I am sure they will not work. Since they have microscopic pores, you can't just "ring" them out when they get dirty.

they also may have chemicals that will leach into the water, water doesnt flow through them, terrible filter media

I wouldn't be so quick to assume they won't work...

They make media that has pores measuring 3 microns... a human hair is approx 100 microns wide, so I would think 3 mincrons would quality as "microscopic"...

My guess is you will be able to find much cheaper material that will work similarly as good... such as felt fabric... but if you happen to be the local Sham Wow represenative and have a garage full, try them out!

My point is the shamWow is designed to absorb and trap water and not let it flow through but who knows, try it on a tank without fish
