Shark attacks - Accidental or Malicious?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Considering most people aren't eaten by sharks, I would think its mostly sharks mistaking us for their natural prey. The problem is with large sharks, the first bite is usually devastating. I guess the acception would be, once they start to frenzy. Such as when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in WW2. If sharks were purposely targeting us, there would be a lot more attacks. We are pretty easy prey in the water

Even when that happened they would drop the bodies of the dead off the side of the raft so the sharks would leave them alone. I think it was like 10 people out of all of them were alive when they got bit, most of the frenzy was eating the dead sailors

It all depends on hunger, if the thing is hungry enough they'd eat us. If a tiger shark is down to eat things like tires and rolls of fencing, pretty sure it would nom on us

I'd have to totally side with your friend. Sharks as a whole do not take a likening to eating things with such low body fat content. When they bite humans they will 99% of the time turn and continue along the beach looking for a more suitable meal.
Also look at shark attacks they almost always happening in low light/visibility environments. Either murky water or in the surf. Both places we like to frequent.
I will have to side with you that us as humans aren't tasty to sharks. I think it's more of the fact that we have so much bone to fat density. Look at seals they have loads of blubber and are a stable part of many sharks diets. Although turtles have a hard shell covering their body inside that shell is mostly tasty flesh.

I am studying sharks in college right now and I am also starting to shark fish and I have learned a lot in a short time. I think the most important part of understanding/interrupting shark attacks is that we as a community need to be more informed and educated on their behavior and actions.

I think it's a mix between curiosity misidentification and intentional attacks. I honestly think sharks don't like something about us such as the thrashing or the taste of us. I'm more towards them not liking the thrashing that we do.

We shouldn't "personify" this. Sharks attack because they want to eat you or because they are figuring out what u r the only way they can - with their teeth.

Exactly Empyreal!! Sharks do not have the brain power to "troll" humans. Just like most every other living organism sharks are just trying to eat with the goal of reproducing. When a shark bites a human and lets go it doesn't swim off laughing at its "joke." It goes swimming off in search of food that is better than a human.

The whole argument boils down to what you mean by accident. Did the shark mean to bite the human? Yes, otherwise it wouldn't have. Did the shark know that what it bit was a human? Probably not, it just saw it as food.

I'm not sure i agree with that. According to the official reports , The USS Indainapolis had 1196 men on board when she was torpedoed. Around 900 went into the water. Very few life rafts were put in the water. The ship sank in 12 minutes. Of the 900 men 317 were pulled out after 5 days. Now the sharks didnt get them all, some died of their wounds, others of possible thirst, and exposure. But a large amount of men were killed by sharks.
