Shark attacks - Accidental or Malicious?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Let's try to explain it in a way he will understand

Sharks don't have hands. They feel something out w/ their teeth. The way we would pick something up to check it out. Its not an accident, they just are opportunistic and if they see a potential food item, they check it out. Curiosity. Hunger. Etc.

The way your putting it seems to me like your trying to blame sharks for their very character! Its like people hitting animals on the road, most try to avoid it but some try to run em over. Replace people hitting animals w/ sharks biting humans and run em over w/ an investigative bite.

You just need to acknowledge you don't think sharks are purposefully like oh hey a human let's eat!

^ I've said i don't think that atleast 5 or 6 times now.. i agree with most everything everyone has said here. Wait what??? SHARKS DON'T HAVE HANDS??!! NO WAYYYYYYYYYY!
I'm debating the 'fact' that theres ALWAYS a misunderstanding or an accident or underlying reason and explanation as to why it happened.
i do like Zoodivers responses.. even though some responses other than mine conflict with his.

1% 2% 3% is enough for me. It shows it DOES happen. no matter how rare..it happens.
The picture you guys are painting is Sharks are all carbon copies of eachother, all exactly the same and not capable of biting a human like they're all robots and they're specifically programed not to attack humans....they're not. if were in the water we're fair game.

(Until they evolve and grow arms and legs..then were screwed ;) )

Ok ok, you find the hilarious classclown shark thats biting humans cuz its funny or the bully shark thats biting humans to be an ahole and then we can discuss this more lol

Hahahaha nobody said that. They investigate potential food items (like us) , scavenge on dead meat, etc. THEY ARE NOT LIKE OH HEY HUMAN LETS EAT. I dont know how many different people can tell you how many different ways before you understand that. If any other large animal was in the place of that scientist w/ the bull shark the shark would have done the same thing. Stop trying to say just humans haha

Why do you care so much that sharks have some sort of malicious intent? I honestly think the more people bitten the better. Teaches people to just stay away, live and let live

This is exactly what I'm saying!! but on the other side of it! they don't think "oh hey human- lets bite him" but they also don't think "oh hey human- lets NOT bite him" which is what "experts" boldly claim and i do not buy.

how many times do i have to tell YOU that? In how many different ways.

And you're right..put any large animal where the scientist was with the bullshark and it also would have been bitten- WOULD IT BE AN ACCIDENT THEN? or is it just an accident because it was a human and not a cow LOL

again...i think humans are very very very low on the list of food. most of the time its accidental mis ID or explority blah blah.. everyone knows all that. but i think sometimes it bites with no confusion at all. But apparently that's impossible right?
even though you said yourself its just a low percentage.

Your using the wrong word. Its not accidental a human gets attacked by a shark. Human do not live in the ocean so yes humans are not a normal food item for sharks. Its all chance you being in the water when a shark is coming close to shore hunting Seals. We humans we want to do our surfing playing in the water where sharks live. But there not always in the vicinity of humans. We don't get shark attacks every day everywhere people are in the water. So it is by chance if you happen to be in the same place a shark happens to be and he is hunting for Seals good chance you will get bit.

I think we need to change the word "attack" to "investigate". Sharks aren't out maliciously attacking for sport. Like I said, there is no record of that even happening. They are biting to learn more about what is in front of them. They have no intention of eating us once they learn what we are (not a food source). On that same note, we can also replace the phrase "accidental bite" with something more fitting...Like "wasn't what the shark was looking for". Clearly they bite on purpose...but the purpose isn't attack and kill or even just for fun/sport, it's more along the lines of "Hey what is this in front of me?"

I think the real surprise would be how many times a shark investigates a person in the water and swims away without the person even knowing the shark was there. Or the other end of it, the shark is aware of a human size object in the water and swims away without approaching purely because it doesn't want the stress of an encounter.

Are we getting closer to a better understanding on all sides?

Edit:
Here's a link to a pic of a nurse shark bite in action (somewhat related) in a thread from the Shark/Ray section. I know many of you guys don't often read there.

^ love the sense of humour, you'd make an excellent rogue shark. I'd imagine you'd be a lot like Bruce from finding memo
