Shark people help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The RTBS and the Rainbow are good choices, but will not tolerate passive fish.

I think a few Bala sharks would look really cool in the eventual 125 with the clown loaches. You could keep a couple in the 75 but they get pretty big.

If you would like something really different that would also have a future in a larger tank I have one for you.
I have recently been seeing very young specimens of Hampala macrolepidota at very reasonable prices.
They are not true sharks of course, none of the freshwater "shharks" kept are.
I haven't seen them around for almost 30 years until know.
There is a write up and photo in Volume II of the Baensche Aquarium Atlas.
They get 70 cm in the wild but are usually about 2/3 that in captivity.
They are only aggressive in the sense they will attack and eat only fish that they can swallow whole. They will school if you get 3 or more.
They make very good "monster" fish eventually. They can fend for themselves and can outrun almost anything else people keep. They are very similar in behavior as the North American Pike Minnow which is a serious piscavore only these are tropical and beautiful.
They like whole earthworms once they get six or more inches long.
These are something you won't be seeing in everone elses' aquariums as you will Tinfoil Barbs or Bala Sharks.

all true but be careful wen buyin apollos since balas are often labeled apollo sharks

I have never seen a bala labeled an apollo shark.

RTBS, rainbow/redfin, and whitefin sharks would be great. They do not tolerate other fish well when they are in very small groups, however in large groups of 5 or more, they are generally very placid towards other fish. If you get the offshot chance of them breeding, then they can be very aggressive, but this is quite rare. I use to keep a school of 12 mixed between the RTBS and whitefins in a tetra community tank, and never had one problem with them being aggressive, and never had them breed.

RTBS can get much larger than 6", I have had them up to 8" SL, and a local shop recently had one that was ~10-11" SL.

thanks for all the suggestions.

What are your opinions on 5 clown loaches and 1 pleco in a 125gl tank? room for anything else? The sucky part is the really slow growth rate on the clown loaches LOL They will take a long time to grow into that 125gl tank but I owe them that space and dont want to add something if it is to much ya know what I mean?

I would go bigger with the shark idea if it could fit in the 125gl with the clown loaches and pleco. Would it be overstocking it?

sandtiger hit the nail right on the head freshwater sharks are just variations of fish that resemble sharks, i have a catfish refered to as a "Silver tip shark "(catfish ) looks *****en, dude you got a ton of room in a125 with 5 loaches and pleco, unless your pleco is about 5 feet your not touching your bioload,
just my .02 http://www.****************/catalog_pages/brackish_water/shark_white_tip.htm

I have 2 silver tipped sharks(aka..columbian shark), 1 albino rainbow shark, and 1 bala shark. All are fun to watch and easy to maintain...(while their young) but as far as a smaller shark that doesnt require a lot of hassle as they get older i would go with the rainbow shark.
