snorkeling? will that work in a pond only 2 feet deep? Even though I love to snorkel and do it all the time isn't snorkeling with rays how Steve Irwin got killed? Although he probably startled it.

Not if you are more than 2ft wide...but I wouldnt be walking...unless you plan on scrubbing with your feet?

Steve's death occured (pardon me for saying this) at his time to go. He was with much larger rays than you will have.

It was a one in a million chance that Steve would get stuck by a ray. It was a similar chance that the ray would release its barb, insuring its own death. On top of that, he was stabbed in the chest, through his ribcage. (Talk about another one in a million chance), after this the barb pierced his heart. (Again, talk about the chance)

Then he STILL might have been okay had he not pulled it out. This will never, ever happen to you.

Steve Irwin died because he spent his life doing stupid stuff around animals. I respect him for the good he did, but when you are holding the most dangerous, wild animals in the world on a consistent basis in an almost nonchalant manner your life is on a timer. As is everyone else's. RIP Steve.

If it's only two feet deep... just reach in?
but it is eight feet wide. In response to your post fleshy I know it was a one in a million chance. If anything though I thought he would slow up and be killed by one of the crocs that he worked so hard to save. I miss him dearly.

I guess this really depends on how intensively you plan on cleaning. If you were going to gravel vac I would most likely be waddling around on my knees with a snorkel mask, you want to see what you are doing in there.

well, that all depends on how well of a job the urchins do. My friend changed his mind about the pond so now I am the one wanting it. I would say I would include stuff to clean up detrus like snails but the blue dot ray i want to include would eat them right? BTW this is planning for the not so distant future. Like when I go to college in two or three years.

Steve was killed by a ray that was over 8 feet across and would have had a barb thicker than your thumb and roughly 15-18" long. He didn't startle it, he was on the bad end of another persons screw up. You have a better chance of being killed by vending machine tipping over on you than from a stingray.

Nothing will ever get rid of detritus. Some things will eat it, and break it down into smaller pieces of detritus, but its never going to be gone. In the end it is up to your filtration to pull it from the water, and you to pull it out of the sandbed. Otherwise it will just sit there and rot.
