Ah yes, that would not be good... Perhaps I will have an overflow "section" not hang on box... Still use the direct drain pipe, but have it not in the open area of the tank... After a little reading, I think that 2x 2" drain pipes w/ tees (as suggested) should be enough flow rate for the sump. Also because I want the filtration to be excellent, I will probably have a 55 gal sump w/ LR, protein skimmer, cal reactor, and than plumb in a 20-30gal refugium on a much lower flow rate.

Great idea/plan.

Little update:

After a little more research, am looking at the Grey Smoothhound. As far as personality goes this shark looks to be a little more active and upward swimming shark. As far as tank size goes, I can up the size of my tank to 8-10' wide x 4' deep x 4' tall which would be 950-1196 gal. At a decent growth rate 6-10" per year, if I get a smaller shark to begin with I'd have 5-7 years until I would need to upgrade the tank; at which point should have the public aquarium going....

Here is the info I've found so far on the Grey Smoothhound:
SRC
"Minimum recommend tank/pond size for a Gray Smooth hound: While it is possible to keep pups in tanks or ponds of at least 420 gallons (6’ diameter or about 8’ x 4’x 2’) for the 1st 12-18 months. Adult gray smooth hounds require a pond of at least 110 sq.ft (Tank - 16'L x 7'W x 3'deep, or a Pond - 12' diameter), with a volume of at least 2,500 gallons for a single adult. For a pair or small breeding group of 2-3 adult gray smoothhounds require at least 200 sq.ft. (Tank - 20’ long x 10’ wide x 3’ deep, a Pond - 16' diameter), with a volume of at least 4,500 gallons."

Hmm .. you do know that the 12-18 months (for the 6' diameter pond/8'x4'x2' tank) estimate is based on the following conditions 1.) starting with a nearly new born pup(8-10" long), and 2.) It's the 1st 12-18 months of life, not just any 12-18 month span.

So that means you will have to upgrade in about 12-18 months - even if you have a 8-10' Long x 4' wide x 4'tall tank, and you start with a small (nearly newborn) pup. At 5-7 years old - a Grey Smoothhound will be about 40-48" long and a mature adult. So it will require a pond of over 2,500 gallons - with a diameter of at least 12'.

Also this figures should be consider absolute bare minimums - for keeping for keeping a single specimen of this species of shark. And a Bigger pond/tank is really highly recommended for species that are active like this is.

Hm. Not sure where I read the growth rate, but stated at 6-10" per year... So w/ a ~10 pup, would be 36"-40" after 3 years? Though again, best part of research on internet, is there is plenty of room to be wrong.

I completely agree on the minimum tank bs. I absolutely hate to see any animal in too small of an enclosure. Reynolds Polymer will be building/designing the shark tank for the public aquarium, and right now we're thinking in the 30,000gal size, but that can change.

Thanks for the post, and hopefully I can find some more info on the growth rate for these guys, of course talking to people that actually have them is hard to find. If in fact they reach adult size in a short time 18-24mo. than will not get that shark. There is a possibility of the aquarium being completed in 3 years, but I plan on 5, and dont want to have anything in cruel conditions.

Any body w/ these sharks? or a different more "swimming" shark suggestion.

I should add by "swimming" shark, Im not ruling out bamboos or any catsharks, Just considering some more active sharks.

Okay, started clearing space for this tank, as well, should be getting electrical in spot for the tanks equipment in the next week or two. (Cant really transport supplies in my bmw so friend and I will be using his truck to pick up lumber in the next week or so as well.)

After looking at some other species I really like the Mexican Horn Shark. Unfortunate for me it appears to be pretty rare in the trade, and difficult to find :( So I will most likely be sticking w/ the bamboo ( I really like the look of the adults.)

I will be making a 10'x5'x3-4'deep. 1100-1500gal w/ a 50 sq ft footprint... Any final comments/suggestions/help before I start construction?
