Shark tank construction advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, if I do the 15x8 tank I was planning on a grey smoothhound, cali horn, brown banded catshark, and a maybe and epi. The gorgs would be the photosynthetic type that I would get mounted and established before the sharks got into the tank but if they get squashed I guess I wouldn't mess with them any more. I have a few friends with large tanks that have gorgs that are literally 3 feet long and pretty beefy! I'm building a custom cree XML LED based lighting system to light the structures with the soft corals with more intense lighting and the rest of the tank with just enough to balance it out. I would be very careful to stick with soft, non stinging corals such as colts, toadstools, misc leathers, colorful shrooms, etc. They tend to be very hardy and much more forgiving as far as water quality and temps go.

Glad to hear it :-) The rock structures are going to be build as single structures using mined reef rock and epoxy/cement. I didn't want anything possible tumbling or collapsing due to sharks pushing things around!

Are those sharks ok in cool water? I'm curious lol as I've never had sharks but researched a bit.....maybe I'll start a shark tank in 10 years lol

Brown banded and epps tend to like tropical, but I've kept them down to the low 70s long term without issue before.
We had a heater issue one time at the aquarium in MN during Winter. The touch pool got down into the upper 60s. It had bamboos and rays in in that did just fine for awhile.

I built a 1,500 gallon tank just almost like the one you are building. The guy that design the tank said the same thing, there is no way it will bow.It was only 4ft. tall.Make a lot of supports for the top

Thanks for the input guys!

Arapaimaman- When you say "supports for the top", Do you mean welded cross beams across the top? I was planning on doing 2 of them, dividing the top into 3 "sections"

Thanks For Clearing That Up For Me,

...One day I would like to have a private touch pool with sharks and rays lol,

if you are worried about what plywood will hold, dont, with 2x s on the correct centers plywood will hold lots and lots of pressure, my 10' round pond has 2 layers of 3/16" Luan holding the water in with 2 x8 on 10" centers and is a big overkill, I could have gone 16" centers but maybe would'nt have been as smooth of a circle. Have you ever tried to push your thumb through a piece of Luan? Water per square inch has less pressure than you could push with your thumb, although this is a circle which is different than squares or rectangles.
