My family and I are going to be moving into our new house soon and while i already have a 210 gallon frehwater tank that I am putting in my study, I am looking to setup a 730 gallon shark tank as the back drop to our living room. The tank dimensions are 130x37x30. I am very intereseted in housing a banded cat shark in this tank along with a few of he large angelfish and tang species and maybe some form of puffer. Is this tank large enough to give a cat shark enough room to comfortably live out its life? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you are going to get a big tank for a shark you might as well go 4 feet in width to provide ample turning space, just my 2 cents.

Honestly. Do you just want a tank that you may be able to get away with for the shark or do you want a tank that he will be comfortable in for life. Any shark will outgrow that tank bc it's only 3ft wide. If your looking for a permanent tank go bigger. If your going to upgrade later than that tank is fine The tank I'm building is 6 ft wide and I know that I will have to get a bigger tank shortly down the road for just about any shark I'm going to keep

I want a tank that the animal is going to be comfortable in but I also have no plans to keep any other species of shark other than the banded cat shark. I had a young one in a large tank about 10 years ago and had to part with him when I joined the service so as far as their adult size is concerned I think the 4ft width JAsamper mentioned would provide adequate room for the animal to live out it's life. I don't like the idea of having to relocate animals because they are going to outgrow what I can accommodate for them that's why I've never gone with black tips nor am I interested in those. I just want to make sure that the tank size I plan on getting which would now be 130x48x30 would provide ample living area for the cat shark to live out its days.

The 48" width is better suited for the banded bamboo shark (no such thing as a banded catshark).
If you want to go with the narrower width, look at arabian bamboo sharks, grey bamboo sharks, coral catsharks or marble catsharks. They would be better in that size.

Im guessing nostalgia and availability have you wanting the brown banded that you used to have as you stated? They are definitely not the best-suited home aquarium shark. The Arabian, gray, hasselts (very tricky-not recommended), slender and Burmese Bamboos (those last two you wont find) are much much better suited for home aquariums. Id venture to say that if you could locate Grays or Arabians, you might get away with a M,F,F group in that tank as those two species average about 2 feet give or take an inch. Much more turning ability than a 40" Brown Banded in a 37" width.
Just my two cents.

So after much consideration And checking out what a few people have done on here I have decided to go with the dimensions 130x60x30. I have seen a guy on here that just got his and they had to actually assemble the glass inside his house. I am hoping to have the same thing done but have to go over a few logistical things with the tank builder before this can happen. The brown banded bamboo shark for some reason has always stuck out to me but i also really liked the way the horn sharks look but from what I understand they like their water on the cooler side compared to bamboo sharks so I don't know that they would work. It's been over 10 years since I had a shark tank so with that being said are there any good websites or books to gather new information about keeping them. Thanks everyone for the help!
