Im looking into purchasing a shark for a home aquarium. A couple things..

I want a shark that wont grow up to be 8 feet though, I want it to be comfortable but around 30 inches max.

What size tank am I looking at getting? would 100 gallons be sufficient or too low? The reason I ask is because i recently saw a tank for sale at that capacity. I would Idealy like a 10 foot long by 5 foot wide tank

Are they loud? Such as get restless and splash water? especially at night?

Any books out there I can read up on about shark husbandry?

I have many questiions about these species so a more in depth conversation thru email would be appreciated vnethercott@gmail.com

Moved to sharks and rays.

A 100 gallon tank is FAR too small for any shark to live in for life. The 10x5 footprint you mentioned earlier is likely what you'd need, though even that would be too small for most sharks.

Good luck.

A 10 ft by 5 ft tank would work for many cat sharks, bamboo sharks or epaulette sharks.
If you want a 30" max, you'll want to look at Coral or Marbled catsharks and Arabian or Grey bamboo sharks. All four of those will stay a bit smaller for you.

There is a link at the top of this section (Sharks/Rays) for the Elasmobranch Husbandry Guide. Best source of info out there. There are also a few other good 'sticky threads' with size and care info. Most of the books out there are full of bad info when it comes to real world care for sharks....Especially SM's "Sharks and Rays" book. Great pics, but bad info on tank volumes.
