So im thinking about setting up a small shellie tank since a ive never had any and b im curious about their breeding, rearing habits, Ive been looking at some pearl ocellatus, is there anything else i could put with them????

I've bred occies before. I had a couple of colonies going, each in a 10 gal tank. Males set up harems encompassing multiple females. They spawn in their shells, and you won't see the fry until they are free swimming. At that point, they'll stay very, very close to the mouth of the shell. Over the next couple of weeks they'll start venturing further away, but never very far. Once I knew I had fry in the tank, I'd start feeding decapsulated brine shrimp eggs or BBS.

I don't know what sized tank you plan on keeping them in, but remember that floorspace is what's required for keeping shellies.

As far as tankmates, it depends on how big your planned tank is.

Occies are great!! I plan on devoting a whole tank to mine soon. Ive kept mine with Julidochromis, Calvus' and Paracyps. They ignore everyone else and stay busy amongst themselves. I put Rainbowfish in there as well and they work great as dithers.

when I used to breed occies, I did notice also the fighting with the male driving off competitors relentlessly, but did nothing to most other fish in the tank

I have 2 occ. golds and 2 occs. brevis-zebras, awesome fish!! I would agree with floor space and lots of shells. I have shells and a cave in my tank. They will breed easily in a 10gal. tank but if you want more then as always the bigger the better. =] They are very intresting fish to just sit and watch. I ve had them bite my finger if I got close when I am cleaning the tank or moving plants around where they live, but they do not fight with one another - so far. I have a calvus thats a little smaller then they are right now in the same tank also and they get along fine. I enjoy them a lot!

I have a 75 gallon shellies tank, with comp shellies, one brevis for now, and a group of multies. I have some temp shellies too! Also for higer up I have a group of V. Moori!

i was thinking a 29, think that would be big enough for some occ and some brevis??
