Shipped Fish

There are a lot of "proven" methods of acclimating fish. I don't personally swear by any, but some do. I use to use the 1/4 cup of new water every 4 minutes (learned that a long time ago) and then I discovered the drip acclimation. I find the drip is a much gentler acclimation process than the cup was. I have never done this other method, but it sounds like it would work only for fish who have been in shipping bags for more than 24 hours. I might give this a try the next time I have fish shipped to me. But if it is just a fish that I drove home from the store, I will drip acclimate it. That is just my two cents worth. You will have to figure out what works best for you.

Everyone is telling me something different.

What should I do?

whatever you feel most comfortable with

Just to add to my above post:

The method of squirting in some conditioner and then scooping them out is fine if the water temps are the same or very close. If not, the fish will go into shock and likely die.

Really the water conditioner isn't a bad idea. I would combine the drip method by adding water conditioner to the shipping water and then drip acclimating them.

when i was looking into ordering expensive VERY sensitive shrimp everyone told me to take the bag and dump it through a net to strain out the shrimp and get them in clean fresh water asap.

Where did u get the fry from? I bought a pair about a month ago from live fish direct, they also were about an inch and are doing great.

Honestly unless the temperature in your tank is lower (significantly) they aren't going to go into shock, and odds are the temp in your tank is higher, so that shouldn't be an issue. I do actually float store bought fish that have only been in the bag 30 mins or so, but the concept of squirt and dump with shipped fish is to get them into clean water asap, as the water they are in is nasty. There is no drip or floating because as I said, the temp in your tank is likely higher, and higher temps amplify the adverse affects of ammonia, which is probably present in a higher than normal concentration since they've been in the bag so long.

People are afraid of this method because they learned the old way of doing things. The old way didn't incorporate fish bought online lol.

If the water conditioner is being added to the bag to eliminate ammonia, why would an increase in temp cause any alarm? With the ammonia being bonded out of the water, there should be no concern for higher temps increasing the affects of ammonia, right? I am interested in how this acclimation process works since it seems there really isn't one. But I may just be stuck in "the old ways" (though you do have a point that online purchasing and shipping has definitely increased dramatically in this hobby). Are there any videos of this process being done? I would love to see how it's done. And can you link any info on higher temps not causing shock? I have never heard of this until reading this thread.
