hey im planning on collecting a oscar and a mayan possibly something else i can catch in south florida. but i was wondering what is the best way to ship them, i have recieved fish before from Rapps but never shipped any. and i dont want to try and drive back to cincinnati for 15hrs in a cooler with a bubble box, i dont think that will work out so well. any info would be great

If you prepared well ahead of time for bringing back your own fish, wouldn't it be easier than shipping them? Most shipping will take a day or more anyway so I don't see why 15 hours with you would be any different. Do a search on this site for shipping fish. I have personally seen several threads about it. I'm sure you could do it yourself for a lot cheaper. Plus you will have the opportunity to check on the fish as you travel back home. I know some people do it by doing a couple water changes on the way. I guess the size of the fish will play a lot into your decision too.

very true, even with the fastest shipping it will take longer than 15 hours. add to that the fact as stated previously that you can change water and monitor everything seems like your success rate would go up tremendously.

Bring the fish with you, Ive done it quite a few times. The trick is for larger species get one of those large beach cooler and drill 4 holes in the top two at each end, snake air tubing into the cooler and attach airstones. Hook up a car converter power system and get one or two air pumps and youll be fine.

I'm sure some shipping methods would require some driving anyway. Probably less than 15 hrs but I've had juvies in the lfs bag for around 8 hrs and they survived without a water change. I only did it because it was a fish store away from home that wasn't available near me. But they should be ok.

I can tell you that I have driven back from Miami to NY with several fish, and it is not that bad. That was 22 hrs.
My suggestion is that if you catch small ones, it will be easier all around, and they will be easier to train off live foods.
There are Jaguars, Midas, and plenty of other cool fish here as well.
