shipping fish from florida

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah I think you'd be a lot better off bringing them with you. a large cooler, a battery operated air stone and you should be fine.

They'll get there quicker if you bring them with you on the drive, and it'll be much cheaper. Overnighting large fish through UPS/FedEx is very expensive. The last box of six adult discus I sent was 20+ pounds and cost $150 to overnight. Plus you have to triple-bag them (at least) to keep their hard fin rays from puncturing the bags, then find a box and styro big enough, an oxygen tank to fill the bags, etc. It's way less complicated to put them in a styro or plastic cooler and throw them in the car with you.

People have mentioned air pumps, but your big concern on a 15 - 20 hour drive is probably ammonia build-up. If you have a cycled sponge filter, attach the battery powered air pump to that and it should take care of the ammonia for you. Otherwise, carry some Amquel or Prime.

thanks for the replies, yea looks like driving them back is what im gonna do. We caught some blue gills with a throw net and they survived for two days in the cooler before i released them. mayans are literally all over the place you can catch them all day in south florida no oscars or peacock bass yet, which is why i wanted to fish down here. good bass fishing, caught two 20 inch alligator gars which are babies compared to what they get. Im gonna drive about an hour and a half down south to Ft. Lauderdale, I heard there were a lot of oscars and peacocks more towards that way. whish me luck and thanks for the replies.
