Shipping fish, how to do it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’ve been on receiving end from C. Breeze C. Breeze . Styrofoam box, and newspaper.

Don’t forget the styra foam panelsi I have lining the box…

i add an outer plastic bag to the individually double bagged fish, and a heater or 2 depending on forcast this time of year.. I like a single hole in the styrofoam above a corner of the heater to keep it getting air

Where do you get styrofoam box?

I use “diy styrofoam insulation kit” from home depot. Comes in a 4 pack of 4 foot by 1 foot by 1 inch thick pieces. I use a hobby knife and straight edge to cut the pieces to line the side of the box. Sometimes I’ll use priority boxes sometimes
A 12x12 cardboard box box
ULine and several other manufacturers/ distributors of shipping materials have heat packs and have small coolers for mailing medical stuff etc. sort of like the boxes Omaha steaks use etc. that’s what Kevin at TUIC uses and that what I send back to him with fry when we do a deal and I sometimes hav an extra one to use for other people’s orders but they are way pricy compared to just building out the interior of a cardboard box so it’s suitable.

I fast fry for 24-36 hours. I fast bigger fish for 48. I
The night or day before I ship I fill a 5 gallon bucket with new water (not tank water) and add an air stone. That is my bag water. The fish fast in my house in a 68-70 degree tank- same temperature the bucket of of bag water is. I use ULine poly bags I like the 2”x16 the 3”x16 and the 4”x16” the most and go up to 6-8” bags if needed but I don’t like shipping big fish generally. The taller bags allow me to tie them
In knots rather than use rubber bands. I double or triple bag with enough water to keep the fish wet and the rest air if it’s overnight or o2 if it’s not or if I have to really pack the box full and can’t have the longer tubes that a bag of air is. Shown is the box / part number for the 4” bags and an inflated 2” bag

I have imported some of the more rare stuff like plat gar, plat endlicheri bichir, yellow fire eel, so I have importation down and good connections in indo.

It's the domestic shipping I am having trouble with. Hopefully JasonGoneFishing can provide me some info on how he ships his fish. I need to get my hands on bulk styrofoam shipping containers like all the sellers use.

most of what I’ve posted may not be much use to you as I deal mainly in fry Ive bred and young growouts. I don’t know where to get the “florida boxes” but I can find out pretty easily if you need. The DIY insulation kit is killer for anything up to about 15” across very fast to make your own container and you can make it the size you need so you aren’t having to ship a bigger box that bills heavier than what you really need

The information was incredibly helpful. I have seen exoticfishshop AKA steve package fish this same way. Only thing is since it's not sealed I will probably have to start using heat packs. I will pick up some today and see what kind of magic I can work. As long as the insulation kits ain't that expensive should work out well. Next step if that all pans out is to somehow get a deal from UPS or Fedex

my Uruguay fish live outside and I’d probably consider shipping them without a heat pack this time of year if overnight Temps were mid thirties, but you have to have the heat pack this time of year and consider that it’ll probably only be good for 10-12 degrees above air temp- so fish can still get cold Overnight etc. the heaters require direct contact with fresh air and then you want to insulate the bags with newspapers etc in the box so they don’t get too hot. In the pictures the fish bags gone to the big bag, the big bag gets rubber banded, the news paper folded up around it snd then the lid goes on and that whole deal goes into a styrofoam box with one or 2 seam left untapped to get air to the heater. This box came from and is about to head back to TUIC
