So I shipped some fish USPS overnight guaranteed. It's now two days now and I am expecting fish to arrive today but dead. Sure I will file claim with USPS.

In any case is it my responsibility to refund the buyer the full amount including shipping or that depends on whether USPS issues a refund including shipping cost + $100 buildin insurance. The fish happen to cost exactly 100.

I would tend to think the later because the buyer paid for a service by USPS and should be at the mercy of USPS instead of me.

What are your thoughts on this?

This its why it important to state ur policy before the buyer even agrees to buy the fish. In most cases you refund the price of the fish. Thats why you offer express or priority the buyer chooses if they want to risk priority. You need to come up with a policy when selling fish that way everyone knows what to expect. But depending on your packing skills the fish may still be fine. Especially with usps. If it was ups they would be cooked.

I give live arrival guaranteed but I see most people add the assumption that the package arrive on time. I guess this implies that I'd the package is delayed then the guarantee is no longer valid. But I did not state that assumption explicitly.

I am not trying to get myself out of this as a matter of fact I feel pretty bad about these fish. Just want to learn a lesson and improve in the future.

What kind of fish was it and how big. Good chance the fish will still arrive alive. USPS Express is handled with top priority. But if you want to guarantee overnight you have to drop it off early morning at the post office. If you drop it off late afternoon it will take 2 days. Plus if the area being delivered is having bad weather like floods it can delay delivery.

These are 6 to 8 inches Malawi USPS. Individually packed 12" bags with 1/3. I shipped another package at the same day 2pm to an adjacent city in California and it arrive 10am the next day as expected.

Because the package didn't arrive on time, the shipping cost will be refunded by the post office, to whoever paid the shipping, live fish or not, but you must go to the post office used, and apply for the refund.
I have shipped and received fish that arrived late, and were still alive.

Not to derail but I'm thinking of shipping some live fish via USPS but am told not to write, "live fish" or "live animals" on the box. What do you guys write to ensure it's handled with utmost care?

That what you should write? Who tild you not to write that? Unfortunatly there are some stubborn usps employees that dont understand that your allowed to ship fish. I know here it all depends who you get so i dont go to the post office anymore. I strongly recommend you write live tropical fish on your box.

I have had this same thing happen to me. I gave my buyer a refund for the fish plus shipping, then went through the process of getting my money back from the USPS. My buyer was happy and that to me is the #1 priority. Had the fish arrived on time but were DOA I would have just refunded the cost of fish. I think that if you weren't to give a full refund that your buyer may think twice before buying from you again. Though you dont have to refund the money before you get it back from the USPS like I did. Good luck! I hope that by some miracle they are alive upon arrival :)
