I see a lot of rants against shippers.
I would like to rant about shippees.
I do not sell fish as a business, but occasionally get requests to send fish, and will do, usually barely if ever, breaking even.
The other day I was asked to send some fish, and agreed to ship on a certain day if money was put in my account to cover the upfront cost of sending, cost of the bags, styro, gas to shipping facility, etc.
So in preparation a couple days before ship date, I removed fish to a holding tank to be observed, stopped feeding so they would not foul bags during a 24hour ship time, and prepared shipping materials, all a bit time consuming.
I also require a signature so I know when it arrives it is properly taken care of.
Shippee wanted it left on porch, to me, a recipe for cooked fish.
When I receive fish, I arrange to be there.
On day to ship, money not in account, but shippee stated I really want them, send tomorrow, it will be in your account, and although 1 more day of starvation not bad, I agreed if money would really be in the account.
Of course money not in account, I won't go in the hole as far as cost goes to ship fish, and did not, and have refused to ship to that person ever.

I can imagine business shippers go thru this and much more garbage all the time.
My initial thought is the person wanting the fish, was scamming for free fish, thinking I would simply send on assigned day, but I guess I will never know.

Always better to play it safe than sorry... Im the same way when i sell to people i dont know, if i dont see the cash, you aint getting the stash...

Given that dealing with live fish for shipping needs extra effort and due diligence, its fair to ask money upfront . I should say ask for a deposit even before starting with the process.

I can see your point here duanes duanes

Something to think about as I am just starting to see the doors in this aspect of the hobby open for me.
Thanks for the post.

When I had my crayfish business I always required up-front payment, sig upon delivery, and pic of issues within 1 hour of receipt. I've lost count of how many people demanded refunds after sending me a pic A WEEK LATER or more after signing receipt of their shipment. And, I never shipped small batches. I shipped 50 - 1000 lot sizes of Cherax crays. I always included extras to cover shipping losses. Only to have customers complain about 1 or 2 dead crays a week after receipt.
I actually had a customer complain that all of the crays arrived dead and soft on a shipment of FROZEN softshell crays delivered in blister pack. I guess it was my fault they didn't know how to order from an edible crayfish listing.

Naw, its their fault for not investing in a cryogenics reviving chamber.

Sorry to hear that considering how much effort you put into sharing and helping others here. I find netting to be troublesome and if I ended up doing it for someone so flakey I would be really annoyed.

Was from here, but I won't name names as it may have been just a noob with no idea of what effort goes into shipping.
Because it's not like going to a LFS and picking up a guppy, is why I decided to do a little rant, to help explain the shipping set up, and how much it takes to get it done, and the lack of return on time and money.
