Is there any need to know information that's different then other Ps before attempting to keep them? There doesn't seem to be the same wealth of information on them (especially shoaling them).

I know a large tank would be essential. What's their growth rate?

Do not attempt to keep a Geryi that has been solo with another Geryi - never worked for me. If they have been kept as a group since young, then seems to work better.

I have only kept Geryi from 6" up to about 10" ( the 10" was beautiful and the biggest Geryi I have ever seen)

The growth rate seems to be somewhat slow (only kept the 6" for about 2 years, and no large noticeable change during that time).

Shoaling them is like any other piranha group... just try to keep an eye on it. Dominant individuals will push the weaker ones up to the water's edge, perhaps in a corner...

I have kept a shoal of 3 in as small of a tank as a 90G.... No difference when compared to that or my 240G.

It's a lovely species to keep - together of course.

You guys brought up dominate Ps in the shoal and how they'll push weaker ones around (IE force them into a corner). Do you guys do preventative measures or just let things play out unless it looks life threatening? That's for any shoals, not just geryis

Depends. I keep a close eye. Sometimes it will just be a dominance stance for a couple days with a fin nip or two.. Separate, let heal, move driftwood etc (reset territories) And place them back in the tank. Observe over next few months.

Sometimes you just have a Piranha that tends to not do well in shoals... then most likely he has to go into a tank on his own or you sell. I have sold some Geryi for this reason - they just did not do well whatsoever in groups.

dunno bout that...lost one natt to my piraya the night following a big feeding. i think that hunger and aggression are two. yes hunger CAN lead to aggression, but you can def have a specimen that will just do bad in shoals and be too aggressive towards the other.

on a personal note, i think this is related to tank space. that gallon per fish rule is a general guideline, but let's not forget that those animals are used to rivers. some of them find 200gal a bit small compared to the amazon...just my opinion...
