this happenes to me if i have a cut on my finger or somthing but mines from my light.
Same thing happened to me.. but I'm not sure if it's electric current or the water itself.. It's like the phrase adding salt to injury..

I had a heater break in a tank before. Some of my fish were dead and my channel cat was fine. I reached in to get the floaters out and got zapped. Once i saw the heater was broken I unplugged it an the catfish and one of the floaters perked up.
And yeah, get a GFI, they save lives, your fishes and potentially yours. if your heater seems fine check the wires of other gear that are hooked up to your tank. they may have exposed wiring coming into contact with your tank.

Im ruling out the possibility that you unknowingly bought an electric eel or catfish :D

I had this happen on my 29g, turned out to be the light. I thought it was kinda fun to feel that buzz every time I touched the water. Just start unplugging everything until it stops.

If it's just a bit of stray current like that, it usually wont affect the fish because they aren't grounded. It will get you because you are touching both the water and the floor, so the electricity flows through you to the floor. The fish on the other hand are only touching the water, so it has no reason to flow through them.

Yeah, I had a light fall in when my arm was in the tank. Buckled my knees and didn't phase the fish so they might not show any signs of a broken heater, etc.

As Bderick said. Make sure everything is running through a circuit breaker. Switch everything off and plug 1 thing in at a time to find the culprit. I have had this several times from faulty power heads and heaters over the years.Tip. When touching water that has current running through it, do it with the backside of your finger tip. The body's natural reaction when electrocuted is to tense its muscles. Your finger will pull away from the water. An old trick I learned when dealing with electric fences.

GFI for the win.

Awhile back my neighbor decided she would open up the pump to her pool and change the filter without turning off the power.

My father had warned her as she was doing this but she said it was fine and just went right into it.

GFI most probably saved her life, she was quite surprised...

Also I just got a shock today doing the same thing, however I put my hand in a good 20 times since i was cleaning and all was well, even when i turned on everything again.

Id say its your own static unless it happens every time.
