Well I'm obtaining another 55 gal, and plan to get a rather aggressive cichlid (all I have now are oscars and other fish.) After doing some looking I found a few types attractive. I also can move them to a larger tank once they grow a bit. The types I was thinking of, were going to be only them and a few dithers such as silver dollars. Please vote :D help me decide. I want one that is going to have the best personality, coloration, beauty, and brawn. I kind of ruled out the buttikoferi a bit, because he gets rather large. Also, I'm kind of leaning towards the red devil, festae, manguanese, or flowerhorn. I kind of like the flowerhorn a lot. And the red devil too lol...

It's not cichlasoma haitiensis anymore, its nandopsis haitiensis.

Also the best fish for you 55gl would be a severum do to the most of the other fish you have listed will get 12in and over and a 55 is only 12in wide. Severums can have quite the personality and there are many colors of them out there. They have different temperments and you could probably even get away with a pair in a 55gl.

You want attitude...get a GRAMMODES...the "Mini Dovi"

Or a Motaguense "Red Tiger"

If you don't mind a 12" fish in a 55 gallon...you can get a Red Devil, Trimac, or Flowerhorn...they have lot's of attitude...Preferably a 75 gallon...but 55 will do if it's a solo fish because they are really mean....some Flowerhorn only hit 10" heh...

Barred Midas don't get as large and they are mean....

Buttikoferi is the same as these fish as far as size....12"-14" on average.....Make sure you keep the water clean that's all.


A managuense has a better chance of outgrowing your 55 gallon (14"-18" average) Definitely need at least 18" wide tank for a full grown Managuense.


If you want dithers like a few silver dollars......then grab a GREEN TERROR (GOLD SAUM)! They are stunning...and some get a pretty cocky attitude and thick too..definitely impressive when they are full grown...some get humps on their heads.... I don't think the GT will ever outgrow the 55.
