Can shop lights sit right on top of glass lids?or do they need to be suspended?

if the light rests on the housing and not the bulbs it should be alright

if it is glass yes.
if it is plexi then no.

It depends if your lid is tight fitting or not. If there is a chance of water getting splashed on it, then I would suspend it from the ceiling. When I setup my 125 gallon downstairs it said right on the box the shoplight came in do not use near water. So my fiance' suspended it from the ceiling.

Yes.
Lid fit tight and are glass.

it works. i have one in my canopy right now. been working for over a year now. kinda need to change the bulb tho
