It's unlikely they are a hybrid, more a mutation derived by inbreeding. It's the same way you get parrot rainbowfish, short body green terrors, short bodied corys, balloon mollys, etc.
They're not hybrids. Just deformed. lol
I don't find them attractive either but I've seen some well kept one and they "pick up in the looks department" I would say.
Definitely helps that they're M. ramirezi with all the color to help make up for the hideous shape.
