Yep I noticed this with my bichirs too. Especially noticeable when growing up an endli.

Also, I've seen large differences in girth even when length is only a couple inches apart, there is a lot of genetic diversity in these fish with respect to length vs. girth.

thanks guys- all of them have grown pretty well- but now that you mention it, the congicus has shown the stretch and fill type growth- the endlis have seemed to have a more uniform type growth overall
 
I just hope my Endli goes for more strech than grow. I like the uniform slenderness of my Senegal and hope to see realitivly the same in my endli....I saw a few monster Endli's with slender more than fat...
 
You can keep your bichirs slender with one meal per day of high protein meaty food like seafood (shrimp, or fish fillet).

Keep the water warm too (85F) that way they don't get over weight.
