Yes and 80% of the time it should be dead before 10 inches...This is not saying anything about your husbandry or tank it is just the fish. Lepisosteus platostomus are nutty and tend to kill themselves easily. These particular gar are not recommended for those that have not kept many of these fish before and really not a fish for a community tank should you want it to live well. A Florida or Tropical would be a much better fish but you very well will need an upgrade on tank size eventually.
Don't wanna through everyone offcourse.. but whats the diff between a tropical and a florida..

Tropicals are in the Genus Atractosteus and closely related to the Cuban gar and Alligator gar Average adult size is 25 to 30 inches in captivity.

Flordia are in the Genus Lepisosteus and considered an off shoot of the Spotted gar Average adult size is 20 to 25 inches in captivity.

my shortnose gar is about 20" now. dead by 10"? i never even heard of that. mine was in a 150gal but it grew so fast that within 6 months i didnt want it in there anymore. he started turning funny and almost grew a kink in its body from the skinny tank. it lives gracefully in my 400gal and from what i hear, its one of the nicest tank kept shortnose gar some people have seen.

Thats nice....you have one of the few that managed to not kill it's self...They are still not a fish I would recommend for a beginner to gars.

Shortnose get even bigger then Florida from what I have been told.
No they do not.. an adult Shortnose in the wild over 30 inches is called a world record. I have sampled hundreds of these fish and still the largest was 27 inches. Average size was around 16 inches.

They are called needlenose gars in some areas they also called billfish, Billy gar and several other things in other areas...

Common names generally suck and never trully ID a species..Write Lepisosteus osseus though and usually it is not hard to figure out what someone is talking about. Beamwinked cylinder fish is obviously not going to be recognized by most.

so the picture above is not a longnose? where does this gar come from?

a tru gar has a snout with nostrals at the tip. false gars are commonly called gars by people or pet stores but that does not make them tru gars. false gars have nostrals near the eyes, not like a tru gar at the tip of its mouth/nose

There is no "tru" gar or False gar.. there are Lepisosteidae and others like Teleosts in the families Belonidae and Ctenoluciidae...

Gar is a common name. Common names do not mean the fish named are related they are just common names....I'm not sure why people do not get this simple thing...Is classification and taxonomy taught in schools anymore?? And why are hobbyists not learning this stuff for themselves anymore?

I thought this thread was about Lepisosteus platostomus (Shortnosed gar)
