Shortening an aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would never fill it up to the crack.. Any amount of pressure could cause something to happen... Getting something, or someone, to cut the glass, would cost you more than getting a new one, or getting 2 used ones on craigslist..

Even if it was patched?

I, and many others, have patched drilled holes that are in the bottom of tanks and have used them for many years. I have 3 tanks in my house right now that have patched holes in the bottoms and I have two friends that have tanks in their homes with patched bottoms... at least one of these tanks were patched 5+ years ago... the rest have been holding for atleast a year, some many more...

Cutting the tank down, isn't a good idea. This would require a diamond bit blade which costs much more than a new tank... takes a very steady hand... and even if done perfectly that much vibration may damage the seams...

you can patch it up, like nutcase said if you cant get a new tank right now, But start looking Its time to upgrade

id throw 30cents of silicone on there and use that as the back of the tank, no one would ever notice and shouldnt have to be aftraid of it cracking more cause the crack isnt going to spread downwards.

its a 25 gallon tank it wont bust from the pressure that happened when something dropped on it or it fell.

In all honesty you could probably buy a new tank cheaper than you can repair that one. IMO

Exactly

I completely disagree...Two 2" x 4~6" pieces of 1/8~1/4"" glass can be bought for very very cheap... and if he doesn't already have silicone laying around it's fairly cheap too...

I could repair this tank in 10 minutes for under $10... and I'm very confident the repair would last 10 years...

I think suggesting he throw it away is horrible advice and is being simply wasteful... :D

Just replace the tank and save yourself the aggravation. Heck I just gave away a 55. The guy picked up last week from my basement.
