I completely disagree...Two 2" x 4~6" pieces of 1/8~1/4"" glass can be bought for very very cheap... and if he doesn't already have silicone laying around it's fairly cheap too...

I could repair this tank in 10 minutes for under $10... and I'm very confident the repair would last 10 years...

I think suggesting he throw it away is horrible advice and is being simply wasteful... :D

You could do this in 10 minutes, maybe he can't.

Yes if you have the knowhow to do it, it would be cheaper. Some people aren't as comfortable doing things like this, and would rather spend a few extra dollars on something safe, than saving a few and always having that worry in the back of your head.

That's very true and I do not think it is a bad choice if he chooses to replace it as opposed to repairing it...

But I think it is bad advice to suggest against repairing it...

This is an exceptionally simple fix that anyone could do. Although so be it not everyone would want to...

When we review the Original Post in this thread...

I have and aquarium and the top has a crack maybe half an inch down. I was wondering if i could take a 1" off the tank with out damaging it? any help or ideas would be great.

He sounds like a guy who is willing to put a little work into saving this tank. Making the repair would be a very simple project that with proper understanding of what is necessary, any semi cordinated individual could make the repair in a matter of minutes.

As opposed to scaring him away from making the repair, why not share with him what it would take to fix it and allow him to decide if it's worth the effort... When reviewing this thread it seems to me like people have highly exagerated the risk and the effort.

He made the post to salvage the tank... why not help him do that...
