Hey guys, one of my smaller shortnose gars died overnight. No obvious signs of distress, injury or illness. Back didn't look broken when I pulled it out of the tank, no visible trauma to the nose or anywhere else. I did take some pics, which I'll try to upload in a little bit.

So now I'm down to 5 shortnose gars....

Hopefully this was an isolated incident, and not something that's going to transmit to the other gars... I'll be doing a water change tonight just to be safe (I have to head to work in 2 minutes :irked:).

Solomon, I sent you an email regarding this as well, let me know.

I hate those incidents...my friend had a blue pleco a little while ago and it died after a week, just super random. that was the first fish death in like over a year for her.

Here are some pics of the gar. Not the best, but I was still half asleep and in a hurry to get ready... you can see that it's in pretty good condition though.

Did you open the belly? Check the gills or mouth if there is something in there that cause the death? It could have eaten something that killed it.

Shouldn't have eaten anything. There's nothing in the tank small enough to swallow besides sand, and the last time they fed was the night before last, on pellets only.

I didn't open the belly, simply because I didn't have the time or inclination to do so. I figure if Solomon is interested, I'll ship it to him, and he can perform a necropsy if wants to.

Strange, lots of dead Gars this month :irked:

First that beautiful Gator Gar in that huge overly filtered tank that had some stuff on it and then was just dead like 2 mornings later.

Then the big Florida Gar that had the issue with something coming out of his rear end. He passed on yesterday I believe.

And now this shortnose.... What's in our water?!!? :nilly:

damn dude. sucks even more considering our hook up for shortys is no longer on :(
(of course ur in the same area so u can hook us up ;))
hopefully u can figure out what killed it.

ps hopefully in a few months im gonna head out and go alittle LNG fishing, maybe. ;)

Yah, I'm hoping I will get a chance to get out and do a little searching. Been really busy working on my house though. Seems like all my spare time gets spent on projects lately...

Do you think it was from a lack of food? I remember a while ago you were posting about how you wanted to get rid of some of your Gars because you couldn't afford to feed them anymore. Maybe this recession is more serious than I first thought. :irked:
