Shortnose Gar Farms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The older man who gave this gar to me said he caught it as a baby here in Kentucky. He and his wife kept it in a 29 gallon aquarium and only fed it blood worms for about 10 years. It was barely able to turn in the tank they had so I offered to give it a better home and immediately bought and set up a 75 gallon for it. Most of the responses I've gotten about it say Florida or Spotted Gar when they see side profile pics. Others suspect Alligator Gar when the see the face. This has now become a quest to figure out exactly what she is lol.

Definitely a faded spotted gar, the body looks nothing like any of the shortnose I've owned in the past.

Do share photos of the old shortnose you've had. It's so rare to see them in captivity. Most pictures are fishing pictures. Even public aquarium pics of shortnose gars are rarely seen.

Here is the one that I had in the aquarium. He is now in our private pond with a couple other shortnose, longnose, and spotted gars.

Hello MFK'ers,

I trying to conduct a study on certain gar species and the shortnose gar fell on the spectrum. I was wondering if anyone here has any idea where to acquire one or if there is any aquaculture around them. I was looking at a few of the hatcheries and made some phone calls but seems to be futile. If anyone knows any hatcheries or any breeders, please let me know!
im predatory fins had them at one point contact him or contact vincentwu he may know other than that idk
