Thanks for the info I may have to get that 20" long nose. I have a 4" gator gar though so I'm not sure if he will play nice later on.......I may have to risk it. How many Farsi total do u have?

wow great collection. very very cool, thanks for shareing

Fantastic growth rate, Conner. Can you document how many you lost and to what cause between the start and the present? Documenting that couldn't hurt for people pouring over the info.

Welcome. Longnose and gator can be an iffy combination. I have 8 total gar, which is what I think youre asking? 4 shortnose, 3 Florida, and 1 Spotted gar.

Thanks.

I lost 3 total. 1 to what I'm sure was a broken back, very early on (still in the 55g tank). I suspect one of the others may have been a broken back as well, although it was not really obvious, although seemed likely. The third I honestly have no idea how it died. No obvious sign of injury or illness, and it had fed just recently before found dead.

Honestly, I wish I had gotten more than just the 7 from the guy, but that was more than I really had room for at the time. If I'd known I'd have the pond in the future, I probably would have gotten like 15-20, I think... That would have let me spread a few around while still have a nice population of my own for tanks and the pond.

damn, man, i'm jealous. wish I could find another shorty

Also, some feeding information. The gar all started on live feeders, mostly comets (not great, I know). Within about a month, all but the smallest were hitting cut tilapia and cut market shrimp. By the time they were moved to the 125g tank (about 4-6 months in my care), the were all taking cut shrimp/tilapia. Within a month of being in the 125g tank, most of them (again, not including the smallest) had learned to eat pellets following the examples of my Florida gars.

The smallest gar was the hardest to convert of all of them. It generally lagged behind by at least 2-3 months behind the others.

The hardest gar I've had to convert yet was the true Spotted gar I got from Solomon. I still have yet to see it take a pellet intentionally. It was also the slowest growing of any gar I've kept.

Nice thread Conner. Glad the shortnose I got found it's way back to you. Hope it's doing well.
