I am currently working on my 180 and trying to figure out a stocklist. I want a fish that is long and skinny for my centerpiece fish. I love aro's, clown knifes, and gars. The smallest fish out of the bunch seems to be a short nose but I still have no idea how big they get? Would they be fine in a 180 with either a few bichirs and two oscars or instead of the bichirs two retic rays?

I would get a few nice florida gars instead of the shortnose gar and I wouldn't mix them with oscars. The bichirs and rays would make good tank mates.

no oscars, and no shortys

get floridas instead

They should be quite comfortable in your 180, I'm guessing it's 24" wide. I don't think your going to find many tank raised yoy gars that are going to be over 20" long so you should be fine.

I thought I heard they will still get huge? I hope I am wrong because I would love to have a Florida!

Florida's are going to be your best bet in a fairly small true gar that you can obtain relatively easily. If the current growth rate of my shortnose are any indication of potential size, they are going to dwarf my florida gars pretty soon, they might even give my longnose a run for largest in my tank. Just get the florida's and in three years you can always get a bigger tank if you need to.

hmm in three years i will be less than 8 months from a masters degree....i could probably get a bigger tank then. but what should i get for tankmates

Most keep gars with arowanas, bichirs, rays, large friendly catfish and of course more gars. I would just look at what the other gar keeps here are keeping with there fish to get an idea of what you can mix them with. Stay way from large agressive feeders because they will steal food from the gars but you can get away with it by hand feeding your gars. Hand feeding make it keeping gars much more enjoyable.

actualy most suggest against aro and catfish. and stealing food isnt the only issues. spooking, as well as general damage is also a consern
