Shortnose gar info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As with all fish, you have to watch for your individual fish’s temperament. Even a so called peaceful fish can be aggressive; therefore it’s pretty much a hit or miss type thing. Even jardinis can be mixed into community aquariums but that doesn’t mean every jardinis will be compatible with the fish you plan on keeping. The comments were for general tank mates for gars, not every combo will work. Perhaps I should have said friendly catfish like Megalodoras.

See I love gars but I have to at least have my bichirs and a lima shovelnose. Those are what I am building my tank around. I'd like to have two florida gars but one of my concerns is that they won't be able to eat and I won't be able to get them on pellets. I had a fish that would only eat feeders before and it was just a pain in the butt.

Lima i heard is a cat that might work(if they dont get eatten, lol) but i dont know for sure.
Bichirs are fine tank mates. They are actually considered to be one of the best tankmates(the best is other gar). Its not too hard to get gar off of feeders(i still love to give mine some occationally) just have to be persistant. If u have other fish with them that eat pellets or prepared than its much easier. My other 3 gar learned off my oldest gar to eat prepared. They wont touch pellets though.

BUT u shouldnt get shortys if u have never owned gar before. florida are prob the best starter gar

i have one look at him now hes on my pictures hes in my other tank and hes better looking but they don't grow fast it will take them a while to get that big to out grow a big tank like that i upgraded to a 155 gallon and that's going to be his tank with two TSN and one Lima along with a jurapari and two clown knifes and tinfoil barbs ( might get rid of the tin foils)

I have never hand any problems getting my gars to eat pellets, it tends to be more of a timing thing than anything else. I usually offer them pellets when they are around 10" and they all take to pellets. If you hand feed your gars then you shouldn't have a problem with them getting enough food but I start hand feeding them when I start them on pellets. When they are younger (less than 10") I just make sure they have access to quarantined feeders at all times in the tank.
