I know there's nothing wrong with live, its just more expensive than feeding other foods, like shrimp and FD krill. They'll still get live no matter what, just like my Florida's do, just on a less regular basis.
I can get a pound of white shrimp for $2.99, whereas 100 feeders costs $10-12. The tilapia is more expensive than the shrimp, but probably a little cheaper than the feeders.
The krill is cheapest of all. Shrimp and krill would be the main diet (like my florida's), with tilapia and feeders as treats once every week to every other week or so.

Tell me about it....my babys are sending me to the LFS every other day for a bag of little guppies....****, time to set up the 10 gallon feeder tank.....oh wait, the babys are in there..lol
These guys are getting big! A couple of them are already longer than my florida gars, although the florida's are a lot thicker. I can tell when the shortnose have gone a couple days without a meal, whereas the florida's could probably go a week without any noticeable difference.
Only 2 of the shortnose haven't gotten that long. One is the real silvery one that has no spots (escept on the tail), which is about 11", and the other is between 9 and 10" and seems to be the runt of the group. He's still got about a 1/2" - 1" on the spotted gar though.
